Spinach is one of my favorite leafy greens. Not only is it easy to grow, but you can reap the benefits of a healthy spinach crop throughout the growing season. Even though spinach grows best in cooler weather (early Spring and Fall), you can continue to grow spinach throughout the year.
I was able to keep my spinach alive throughout the Winter using a season extender. Because the spinach was protected, I had spinach growing quite well pre-Spring, and I harvested a full basket of spinach just before the first day of Spring. Since then, I harvested spinach three more times with the same plants. And how did I do this? I shall reveal my secret.
The Secret Revealed
Harvesting spinach is not just planting a seed, watch it grow, harvest, and that is it. For me, I extend the spinach growing by clipping the leaves and leaving the roots in the ground. You can do this several times over before the plant no longer produces leaves. After the second or third cutting, you can let the spinach go to seed, so you can start a new crop in the late Summer or early Fall.
Delicious and GOOD FOR YOU!
Spinach is rich in vitamin K and is a good source of vitamin C, iron, and potassium. None of this is in the forefront of your mind while enjoying a spinach and feta omelet, a smoothie, or a spinach salad full of other veggies and fruit. All we know is that spinach is very tasty. Getting nutrients from spinach is just an added benefit.
Easy Growing
The best thing about growing spinach is that you do not need a big space. You do not even need a garden. All you need is good soil, water, and sunlight (and seeds of course). Grow spinach outside or indoors. The choice is yours, but play around with growing spinach and see what works best for you.
