Birdhouses – Not just for the birds

A couple years ago I went to a local arts and crafts show where I came across a vendor that sold bat houses. Since I happened to be in the market for a bat house, I decided to buy one. To my surprise, I was given two free birdhouses along with my bat house. How awesome is that?! They were nothing fancy. Just plain old wood birdhouses screaming for color, glamour, and glitz.

It is not like I was going to bedazzle a birdhouse, although I would not put it past me to do just that. I gave both birdhouses a nice coat of blue outdoor paint. Then, I started with one of the birdhouses, adding a shaker-type roof with brown exterior wood stain, creating a fun flower design, and adding a dragonfly cabinet handle as a perch. Such a great way to bring color and whimsy to the birdhouse and your backyard.

** The supplies from this project came from Lowe’s and Hobby Lobby. Two of my favorite places to shop… and I do shop there quite often.

After posting to social media, my Aunt asked me to make her one, so I did! I created a similar design, but I think I love the flower I painted on her birdhouse so much better. I love the added pops of yellow within the flower.

For this project, my hubby completely rebuilt the roof of the birdhouse, and I added the shaker roof. The roof was the bulk of the work. It does take time and patience, but the end result is worth every moment. Love it!

Several people reached out to me to do a “Birdhouse Painting and Sip Party.” I am seriously considering it. I think it is a great idea and would be so much fun. So, let the planning begin!

In the meantime, I have one more birdhouse that my son built when he was little. It is more rugged than the other two in its very raw state, and it is quite a bit imperfect. That is the charm of these projects. They do not have to be absolutely perfect. Matter of fact, the result is best being perfectly imperfect.

Now that my first birdhouse has a new resident, it makes me so happy and inspires me to keep making more. I will definitely come up with new designs. I love that I can provide a fun and colorful home to the neighborhood birds.

Reflecting back, this project may have been more for me as a stress relief. Giving a home to a bird is a bonus. Who knows? I may just keep creating birdhouses for every tree along the property, and I may later have them available for purchase in the Grow with me Shop. So stay tuned.
