Repurpose An Old Deck

When the above ground pool became more like an old battleship, we decided to tear it down. The rust was becoming overwhelming on this near 20 year old pool. We just could not keep up with the rust. Trust me when I say that there was not enough boat bondo in the world to save it.

What is left behind? Well, a big old pool deck. Some people may see old deck boards as trash. I see it as great potential for lots of projects involving repurposed wood. My hubby may see it as more work for him.

The Breakdown and Rebuild

I will say that this deck project was longer than it should have been. We had to first disassemble the left and right sections of the old pool deck. Then, we had to make sure the middle section remained in tacked and reinforced. The disassembly took a couple weekends due to rain, but I am not talking consecutive weekends. It was weekends that were weeks apart.

Once the middle section frame was ready, it took FOREVER for the delivery of the composite deck boards. This is where having a friend with a super-long trailer could have come in handy. Instead, delivery of the boards took months. When the boards did arrive, hubby and I slowly walked the middle section of extremely heavy framing about 75 feet to the “She Shed.” You would not think a 4×12 foot wood frame would be that heavy, but OH MY! It is.

Finish Product

At the end of the day, it was worth the wait and labor to see the outcome of this project. Dave did an amazing job creating a new old deck for the “She Shed.” Or, should I say an old new deck? He also created a small platform for my composter.

It does my heart good to see old wood brought back to life. Just beautiful, simple, and perfectly imperfect. Now, it is time to landscape. Next, we have to decide what to do with the empty space where the pool and deck stood for all those years. Let the planning begin.
